8/6 News Release

Full EDD news release here. Summary below.

$600 Payments

  • Federal government and Congress has not passed anything

  • Any weeks that are eligible between March 29, 2020 and July 25, 2020 will receive the additional $600 (which means if you certify for older weeks although TODAY may be a date past July 25 -- you will still receive benefits + $600)

New things with EDD

  • Email notifications will be sent to claimants with active claims to remind you to certify

  • New phone menu when you call the technical phone line (more info here)

  • EDD Calling Upgrade: when EDD calls it'll show "St of CA EDD" or the UI call center number 833-978-2511 instead of blocked or unknown

Additional useful links newsletter includes:

EDD warns of UI Fraud

Be diligent and look out for the following suspicious activities:

  • Receiving communications regarding unemployment insurance forms when you have not applied for UI benefits

  • Any fees involved in filling or qualifying for UI benefits. EDD does not charge for services associated with unemployment benefits

  • Unsolicited inquiries related to UI benefits

  • Fictitious websites and social media pages mimicking those of government agencies

  • People approaching you and claiming to be EDD reps -- the department will not send staff to your home asking for your personal identifying information

SIDE NOTE: This website is not affiliated with EDD at all. Just here to try and help you decipher their confusing newsletters and convoluted website.

Employers: Reimbursable financial break from Federal Government

  • New legislation (S.4209) changes the way employers, including non-profit organizations, will be charged for UI benefits paid to employees during this pandemic

  • Instead of employers paying 100% of the costs, the federal government will pick up half the costs and reimbursable employers will be charged for remainder of the bill

  • EDD is waiting guidance from US Department of Labor

Other questions that have been asked

Will the extension backdate? Will it be 70% of wages? Will it be $400?

  • Anything related to what the stimulus package includes -- we have NO IDEA until it officially passes. Good news is that the Senate seems to be a little more open to the idea of the $600

  • One article referencing that here
